How To Teach Kids To Think For Themselves

Having kids is one of the most incredible and humbling acts we, as humans, can experience.

Bringing new life into the world is a remarkable feat, and having little genetic “mini-me’s” running around understandably brings out the more protective side of our personalities.

But in this quest to make sure our kids are safe and equipped with all the skills they need, where do we draw the line between looking after our kids… and limiting them?

Moreover, how do we raise our kids to think for themselves — even when it means going against our own values and beliefs?

While this can be a blow to our egos, it fundamentally comes down to the important distinction between absolute truth and relative truth. This is the simple contrast between the truths in the world that are scientific fact, such as Newton’s laws, and others are more subjective — and thus open to debate.

Growing up in this day and age, where smart phones are the norm and it’s inconceivable to think of a world with no internet, younger generations are increasingly exposed to a variety of voices, viewpoints, cultures and opinions which would have previously been off-limits.

This results in children being empowered to pick and choose whichever beliefs and world views resonate with them… and to discard those that don’t.

Yes, our kids are part of who we are, but they’re also autonomous in their own right, with the ability to choose — and think — for themselves.

And isn’t that all anyone could ask for?
